I'm still in the middle of reading this book, but I would like to recommend it as it provides a credible explanation for the existence of Deutero-Isaiah. His explanation is that around 200 BC the canon of the Hebrew prophets was closed. Henceforth any potential prophet would not be listened to in his own name. The only route by which one could get a hearing would be to include one's message in the writings of a prophet who was already accepted.
If one examines the pseudepigraphic literature of this period, what is remarkable is the extent to which it is also completely imbued with Zoroastrian theological concepts and deutero-Isaiah is no exception. Given the closure of the canon, it is thus possible to see why these new religious concepts of apocalyptic eschatology had to be accommodated in this way.
