Quaestor's last recommendation and particularly his comment about using it as a set text has got me thinking. There are numerous books on the Jesus of history aimed at undergraduates and published by various academic presses (a potent money spinner??).
However, to my knowledge most of these publishers tend to be found only in the larger bookstore chains (Waterstones et al) in the academic section and possibly remain out of view to most readers. From time to time I browse the range of books at places like Smiths (usually with a horrified gasp) and some Christian bookshops, but I would really like to know what books on the historical figure of Jesus are out there to the general reader, and which have you found helpful?
