At a recent Syneidon Course held in Stourport-on-Seven, I enjoyed the mini quiz on the Nativity.
For those who weren't there here are two of the questions:
1. Which Gospel(s) describe: 'three kings' ?
2. Which Gospel(s) describe: 'the ox and the ass' ?

--------------------------------------------------------------
The Nativity story story appears in just two of the Gospels.
For question one: 'three' and 'kings' aren't there.
For question two: these animals may have been introduced into the story around the 12th Century.
............................................................................
Now a question for the experts:-
When did the first reference to camels appear in Nativity/Epiphany story?

Glad you enjoyed the quiz! Very Happy

Firstly I apologise for the lateness of my reply - for some reason my early warning system telling me of forum postings didn't pick this one up.

Camels? Good question. To be quite honest, I have no idea when they first appeared. I'll try and look it up. However, my inital response would be that their presence would have been accepted by implication as the form of transport most likely to have been adopted by the wealthy magi.

If anyone else has more information or knows of a more convincing explanation for the presence of camels within the Nativity story please let us know.

Funnily enough there are only 2 references to camels in the entire NT and both of them are used within Jesus' teaching: The camel and the eye of the needle and the image of straining gnats and swallowing camels.

Richard
