It appears that I have the great honour of being the first person to post on the Syneidon forum!
I thought that I should start a 'new members' thread so that regular users can introduce themselves. My name is Helen and I have recently completed a PhD at Birmingham University. My subject area is 'Jesus the Magician' and I have a general interest in matters relating to the study of the Historical Jesus.
I'm very much looking forward to joining the discussion!

Thanks Helen. It's nice to have some personal info on who we are speaking to.
I am Richard, most of the relevant info is in the biog on the site under the About Us tag, so I won't bore everyone by repeating myself.
I am very interested in the use of the Bible within the first couple of centuries of Christianity. I have a really soft spot for early Christian papyri and plan sometime to do some serious research into their punctuation. Meanwhile, I am researching the relationship between academic Biblical Studies and the church and whether it is possible to create some type of dialogue between the two approaches.

| Hello. I'm Michael Counsell, a retired C. of E. vicar who now lives in Birmingham, though I have been able to enjoy much travel all through my life. I'm kept busy helping out at various churches, and am lucky enough to have a publisher, Canterbury Press, who, whenever I complete a book for them, invite me to start on another. 'Every Pilgrim's Guide to the Journeys of the Apostles' contains insights into St Paul and others by visiting the places where they worked. 'A Basic Bible Dictionary' attempted to make the present state of scholarship (I hope) available to the general reader. 'A Basic Christian Dictionary' has just come out and offers a reasoned approach to core doctrines, with a comparitive approach where different Christians disagree, and a historical section. Every year I publish a new volume in 'The Canterbury Preacher's Companion' series, with 150 sample sermons based on the Anglican lectionary. I am keen that these should include the latest developments in Biblical interpretation and research. I look forward to learning from others through this web site

Hello, I'm Rowland (a bit like the once-famous rat, or the obese one in Grange Hill for those who remember - I don't have much in the way of role models).
I'm doing an MA in Biblical Studies part-time at the University of Birmingham and I'm interested in the connection between academic Biblical Studies and the Church. This interest began half-way through my degree at a theological college when I found myself thinking, 'Why isn't this kind of teaching available in the Church?' (In my experience it wasn't)
When I finish, I would like to be involved in making the sort of thing I learned in the first year of my degree more widely available.
I'm really glad to see what you're trying to do here (Richard and Helen) hope it goes well.
Rowland.
