It seems to me that the division between faith and academe arises from fear: believers afraid that academic enquiry and close examination of texts may destroy their faith (this doesn't seem to fit in with a true appreciation of world and everything in it, including the human mind, being created by God); non-believing academics afraid that, if they are empathetic, they will become somehow ensnared in the religion they study and unable to think clearly. Perhaps we all need to be braver!
